Fibromyalgia and Adrenal Stress

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

Fibromyalgia is commonly accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbances and joint stiffness, along with other underlying conditions such as difficulty swallowing or breathing, tingling of the skin, muscle spasms, sensitivity to light, anxiety, and brain fog.

Adrenal fatigue (or burnout) is very common in Fibro and can heighten brain fog and, importantly, dramatically increase pain levels. Adrenal fatigue stems from overworked adrenal glands. The hyperactive stress response in Fibro causes the adrenal glands to work in overdrive - all the time.

The continual bombardment of stress forces the adrenals to pump out cortisol at a continuously high rate. The result - overworked adrenal glands that never get a “rest”. And with no rest comes “burn out”.

Normally, when our bodies experience adrenal fatigue, we experience lethargy or headaches. It's the bodies way of saying “STOP” so it can drive down it's heightened adrenal level. But (there's always one right!) - the body is very very clever, and in Fibro sufferers it knows there is a quicker and far more effective way to hit the brakes - the body triggers a pain flare! If you've ever experienced pain flares that emerge out of nowhere, chances are the origin of the flare is related to this adrenal stress response.

One of the biggest predators to creating excess adrenalin is poor quality sleep. “THAT’s ME” I hear you say! One of the most effective ways to reduce adrenalin is to address sleep issues with quick release Melatonin, compounded as a Troche. Studies have shown that improving the quality and quantity of sleep can reduce adrenal levels by as much as 30%. This, in turn increases the window between sufferers “resting” adrenal levels and the point at which an adrenal stress response (pain flare) is triggered.

It’s vitally important that Fibro sufferers manage adrenal stress. Along with Melatonin to assist with sleep, there a number of advanced nutrients such as Magnesium as Glycinate, Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+), Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) that are highly effective.
